Historical Context and Origins

  • The Muse: The character of Alice was inspired by Alice Liddell, one of the three daughters of Henry Liddell, Dean of Christ Church, Oxford, where Dodgson taught.

  • The Genesis: The story was first told during a boating trip on July 4, 1862, to entertain the Liddell children. The original handwritten manuscript, Alice's Adventures Under Ground, was presented to Alice Liddell in 1864.

  • Real-Life References: Many characters and elements were puns or inside jokes related to people and events in Oxford, though the narrative itself is fantasy. For example, the Dodo is believed to represent Carroll himself, due to his stammer causing him to introduce himself as "Do-Do-Dodgson".

  • The "Darker" Origin: While often considered a whimsical tale, the creation of the story was surrounded by the personal life of a Victorian author, including his complex relationships with child friends, which some historians have analyzed.

While Alice in Wonderland is a fantasy novel, exploring its origins provides a glimpse into Victorian academic life and the personal world of its author.
